Sometimes big change can start with efforts of our community’s smaller members. Madison Nelson, a fourth-grader at Brookwood Elementary School, recently held a fundraiser at her school to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Georgia Mountains.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization geared toward changing and improving the lives of children in the area by providing them with mentors to empower them to succeed. Whether the mentors are joining the kids to play sports or read with them, or to dole out advice and support, these “Bigs” set out to have a lifechanging impact of their “Littles.”

Though she is not a participant in Big Brothers Big Sisters, Madison organized a change jar fundraiser for all fourth- and fifth grade classes at Brookwood to benefit the organization.

Madison sought and gained approval from administration at her school, made a flier, decorated collection jars and collected and counted the proceeds once the fundraiser was complete.

All contributions are greatly appreciated, executive director Staci Halyak said.

“Every dollar helps the ongoing process of providing help to children,” Halyak said.

Madison and her classmates raised $301, which was matched by Big Brothers Big Sisters. Madison recently presented the donation to Halyak, who described the fourth-grader as “sweet, active and thoughtful.”

“She wanted to do this all on her own,” said Halyak. “Madison impressed us all with her perception of need in our community.”

For her determination to help others, The Daily Citizen names junior philanthropist Madison Nelson Citizen of the Week.
